A few years ago, when I began studying Mental Health Counseling, I felt very lost and had a lot of questions. I decided to start a blog with helpful information for students who felt the same way. Unfortunately, for years that blog never amounted to anything and now I know that there is a lot of help available for beginning counselors and students. My money is on mentoring and professional organizations. There are also books and other websites dedicated to these subjects like http://www.beginningcounselor.webs.com/.
So while A Counselor's Eye never became a reality, the intention led to the discovery of a lot of valuable information. If you are starting out and you need some guidance, I recommend you contact the professional association for your profession. In my case, that was the American Mental Health Counselors Association and their respective state and regional chapter. Ask about mentoring and reach out to recent graduates who still remember what it was like to be in your position and can share with you what to expect in the near future.
This blog was originally going to be called A Counselor's Eye, although with a different purpose, but I am retiring that idea and just sticking with a more general blog for now.
